Mercedes-Benz SA / PPP HIV and AIDS Workplace Project
The purpose of the cooperation agreement with GTZ was to ensure:
-
The development of a progressive and dynamic HIV and AIDS strategy for Mercedes-Benz South Africa which systematically addresses HIV and AIDS as a key obstacle to sustainable development
- The implementation of an appropriate, needs based, world-class HIV and AIDS Workplace Programme aimed to preventing new infections amongst employees, dependents and their communities, ensuring comprehensive treatment, care and support, and providing a platform for meaningful community involvement
A public-private-partnership approach achieved:
-
Collaborative management and policy-driven strategy ensuring ongoing monitoring, evaluation and reporting within a framework of excellent corporate governance
- Information, education and communication services centred on the peer educator approach
- Comprehensive treatment, care and support services and the creation of a non-discriminatory environment in which voluntary counselling and testing for HIV is promoted.
- Ongoing access to appropriate anti-retroviral treatment was prioritised
- Extensive community involvement in partnership with families, health-care professionals, traditional healers, government and non-governmental organisations
- Corporate Social Responsibility, advocacy and leadership in the field of HIV and AIDS

At Mercedes-Benz South Africa we are extremely proud of our latest certification as a BBBEE Level 4 contributor. While we have led the industry overall from the outset, and remain the leader in this respect, we are happy to share this rating now with two other manufacturers. However, MBSA still sets the benchmark in the most strategic areas of Management Control, Employment Equity and Skills Development.
Our focus on transformation started long before legislation demanded it and therefore we have more experience to implement transformation in such a way to best benefit all our stakeholders and interest groups.
We believe in challenging ourselves daily to improve on this, wherever we can and in any manner possible.
Dr Hansgeorg Niefer, CEO of MBSA. | |
