Mercedes-Benz leads the premium segment in 2010

7 July 2010

Mercedes-Benz Cars, a division of Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA), has reported positive sales for the first-half of 2010 of 12 433 units, an increase of almost 22.8 % compared to year-to-date sales of 2009, once again securing the No. 1 position in the premium segment for the brand with the three-pointed star.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class continues to dominate its segment, performing extremely well with total sales of 7 101 units year-to-date.

“We are proud of our C-Class sales, as these vehicles are manufactured in our East London plant. Just recently the plant received a top international award in the J.D. Power and Associates U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS). This Platinum Plant Quality Award surpasses its earlier achievement of a Gold award, for ‘best quality of all plants supplying into the US’,” says Eckart Mayer, Divisional Manager, Mercedes-Benz Cars.

Last year, the plant received the 2009 IQS Gold Plant Quality Award for producing vehicles yielding the fewest defects and malfunctions of any plant in the Europe and Africa region that serve the US market. This year’s award, however, is for producing vehicles yielding the fewest defects and malfunctions of any automotive plant supplying the US market.

“The complete Mercedes-Benz E-Class range has been introduced over a period of a year and sales across the model line-up continue to excel, maintaining a clear leadership in the full-size luxury segment. The E-Class family is represented by the sedan, coupe, cabriolet and estate variants,” adds Mayer.

“Our Mercedes-Benz S-Class sales have also increased by 25% over year-to-date 2009. This can be attributed to the appealing design and the superior technical innovations, offered as standard in the S-Class, making this model the preferred choice amongst discerning customers,” adds Mayer.

“The Mercedes-Benz M-Class has outperformed the 2009 year-to-date sales by 50%, and we are delighted with these 2010 year-to-date sales of 1 028 unit,” concludes Mayer.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class, S-Class and M-Class are currently available with a distinctive sports and AMG body styling package, for customers who desire a unique and more individualistic styling option.

Executive message

At Mercedes-Benz South Africa we are extremely proud of our latest certification as a BBBEE Level 4 contributor. While we have led the industry overall from the outset, and remain the leader in this respect, we are happy to share this rating now with two other manufacturers.
However, MBSA still sets the benchmark in the most strategic areas of Management Control, Employment Equity and Skills Development.
Our focus on transformation started long before legislation demanded it and therefore we have more experience to implement transformation in such a way to  best benefit all our stakeholders and interest groups.
We believe in challenging ourselves daily to improve on this, wherever we can and in any manner possible.

Dr Hansgeorg Niefer, CEO of MBSA.
